About me
I have been a maker for as long as I can remember - even as a kid my early memories are of wondering how I could continue to be a maker of ‘things’ in the grown up world! I consider myself very fortunate that I have been able to do that and I have mostly avoided having a ‘proper job’!
Simple folding knives have been a bit of an obsession for some time now. I find them endlessly fascinating because they are useful objects that can be tackled using a very simple set of skills. There is an almost endless scope for variety of materials.
There’s an element of low tech engineering that I find as enjoyable as the finished product. Making jigs and refining processes is as important to me as the finished object.
I feel a quiet sense of satisfaction when a knife is ready to leave the workbench and go to its owner.
Getting them to open and close with just the right feel is always the focus. Making them precise and beautifully finished is part of the story, but the marks the owners will add through use and love is what really makes them come to life.
I want my knives to be something loved and like an old friend you take to a picnic. They have a personality and I love the idea of having a bond with the tool you carry in your pocket - it’s as old as the first flint tools and the idea that you would be buried with the things you loved around you because they meant something, is really appealing to me.
Knives are my main focus. I also love to make jewellery. You can see some of this on the ‘jewellery’ page of my website.
